By January 1, 2013, all public safety, industrial and business two-way radio systems operating in the 150-174 MHz and 421-512 MHz Part 90 radio frequency bands must migrate to and operate in at least 12.5 kHz efficiency. Campus security executives whose agencies are not in compliance with this mandate could be in violation of FCC rules, be fined and even lose their licenses. Radios certified by the FCC since February 2007 are capable of operating in 12.5 kHz and those radios can most likely be reprogrammed for 12.5 kHz narrowband operation. Older radios not capable of 12.5 kHz operation must be replaced. Contact your radio vendor for more information.
